Chapter 59
Desmond arrived at a watchtower on the north wall and started shooting arrow after arrow at any flying beast that approached the defensive perimeter, unfortunately, he could only play defense against the Ripper Crows as they were flying too high and difficult to control distinguish in the dark.
The military was tempted to stop Desmond for questioning, to see who the hell he was and how he circumvented the defensive perimeter by reaching the watchtower, but after watching him take down the second ripper raven, they decided that the questions could wait until they were sure that they would get out of this carnage alive.
Relying only on the special arrows and the dual mana infused by the bow in them Desmond was able to take down little by little the descending crows trying to kill the soldiers on the wall, stable as a mountain and fluid as a river the shots continued stepping out of his bowstring straight toward his enemies while managing to sufficiently divide his attention to the rest of the battlefield.
As a matter of fact, Desmond hadn’t recklessly rushed onto the battlefield, perhaps it was something he had done in the past, but not now, the words Claire had said to him before leaving still echoed in his head. He had noticed something strange in the entire event, he was not sure that his assumptions were correct, but if they were then things were about to get ugly for humanity. As for what his assumptions were, well it could be summed up in a simple sentence: Everything seemed planned.
The attacks began in the south little by little pressing the defense line, then simultaneous attacks in the east and west, this continued for a time until attacks from herds of specific beasts and other larger beasts forced the military to use all their explosives along with his artillery. When the ammunition began to be scarce and the soldiers to lose resistance, the attacks began in the north wall, which coincidentally had little manpower because it had been deployed as reinforcements in the other three walls.
Add to that Desmond’s current enemies that could well be classified with an air assassination unit, which at the very moment they showed up, they first targeted the esper that had caused the most damage on the battlefield. Desmond in fact could at the moment save that espers life, but he chose not to do it after hear him talk about going and enjoy a few girls in town.
Desmond was almost certain that a being with intellect was behind this attack, as to whether it was an esper that could control beasts or some kind of intelligent beast, that was beyond Desmond’s abilities to know.
Drawing his own conclusions in his mind, Desmond continued to channel his mana manipulation ability to give an extra boost to the firing power of the bow, it was also a way to avoid exhaustion. Suddenly Desmond felt a disturbance within the whirlwind of mana he manipulated, slyly directing his attention to the place where the disturbance originated only to find the air empty.
.....
A flash of inspiration led him to put an unplanned but viable use to his ability to manipulate mana, concentrating he began to increase the density of mana within the whirlwind making the distortion within it more noticeable. Bringing his senses and coordination to the limit, he used the mana burst to make a high-speed spin and direct the arrow at the bowstring that previously seemed to be aiming at a target in the sky.
Without even pausing to think if he was acting rashly, he released the bowstring, and the arrow now densely charged with dual mana shot out in a flash of light that was soon followed by a burst of blood just a couple of meters from where it was. found.
Soon a pseudo humanoid figure was revealed, Desmond had seen this type of creature before and that was exactly what worried him, because this type of beast used to be just a fantasy, he was not sure if there was a real relationship between them but the beast Agonizing in front of Desmond it looked like a lizard man, perhaps the only difference that Desmond could detect with the naked eye is that he looked more like a type of gecko rather than a crocodile.
Regardless of the origin of this male gecko, Desmond was able to quickly link the gecko’s invisibility to an ability of a certain old-world reptile, the chameleon. But Desmond had more important things to worry about when sensing the second disturbance in his little makeshift mana domain he simultaneously witnessed some soldiers falling dead out of nowhere with blood spurting from their throats.
Not wanting to see the defense line collapse before this invisible enemy, Desmond fired a warning arrow at the invisible enemy near him, with a swift movement he stepped onto the guard tower railing and with a somersault fell in the middle of the defensive line, with a shot heavily reinforced with mana, he split the back of another gecko man who was attempting to slit another soldier’s throat.
This successfully provoked the other invisible assassins, who identified him as the shooter who took out their air unit and a threat to their assassination unit. One of them tried to ambush Desmond as he had done to other foolish humans in the past, only to find Desmond’s dagger ripping his throat instead, he soon fell to his knees bleeding like those humans he despised.
Watching the gecko man die slowly and the others reveal their appearances after realizing that his invisibility was not useful against him, Desmond revealed a smile when he saw them fall into his bluff, the truth was that Desmond could identify the position of these warriors invisible, but this required a lot of concentration and was mentally exhausting.
Knowing that using his bow would be unwise, Desmond took a dagger in each hand and taking a stance he saw his enemies approach his position little by little, Desmond with a wild smile hidden by his mask prepared for battle, of course, some habits are hard to put down so Desmond still expressed his mood with a strange phrase.
′′ It′s showtime babe. ′′
